Richard L. Hirons, 78, of Bluffton, IN., formerly of Van Buren, IN., passed away at 11:16 AM on Saturday, February 01, 2014 at Heritage Pointe in Warren, IN.  He was born on Friday, February 08, 1935, in Anderson, IN.  Richard was a 1953 graduate of Hartford City high school and served in the Hartford City Unit of the Army National Guard. He was a member of both the Van Buren United Methodist Church and the Life Community Church in Bluffton. Richard retired in 1996 after 40 years of service from General Motors in Marion.

 

Survivors include: Wife - Connie Hirons, Bluffton, IN., Daughter - Penny (Husband, Chuck) Slayton, Fort Wayne, IN., Daughter - Sherry (Husband, Charlie) Barnes, Bluffton, IN., Son - Rob Caylor, Montpelier, IN., Daughter - Catrena (Husband, Kevin) Taylor, Toledo, OH., Daughter - Lori (Husband, Todd) Johnson, Mesa, AZ., Son - Jonathan (Wife, Melissa) Caylor, Oklahoma City, OK., 2 Grandsons-Andrew Slayton and Luke Slayton, both of Fort Wayne, IN, 14 Step Grandchildren and 7 Step Great Grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his: Parents - John & Eva (Monroe) Hirons, Biological Parents - Edward Paine & Ruby Hatton, 1st Wife - Marie (Nash) Hirons and one Daughter - Cindy K. Evers.

A service to celebrate Richard’s life will be at Van Buren United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall 108 South 2nd St. Van Buren at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 06, 2014 with Pastor Jerry Qualls and Pastor Leon Pomeroy officiating.  Interment will follow in the Van Buren Cemetery in Van Buren.

Amy Marie Thurman

Amy Marie Thurman, 41, of Hartford City, IN, passed away at 9:25 AM on Monday, January 27, 2014 at her residence in Hartford City.  She was born on Tuesday, February 01, 1972, in Blackford County.  She married James "Jim" Thurman on Saturday, February 25, 1995 in Hartford City at St. John’s The Evangelist Catholic Church.  Amy was a 1990 graduate of Blackford High School and a 1994 graduate of Purdue University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Entomology. She was a 10 year Blackford County 4-H member and was a current 4-H Tractor Club Leader. She worked at Tech Services in Bluffton, where she had been employed for the past 17 years.  Amy was a member of the St. John’s The Evangelist Catholic Church in Hartford City and the Blackford County Breast Cancer Awareness Group. She holds both the Montpelier Middle School and the Blackford High School records in the 1600 meter run. Amy loved to run and enjoyed watching both of her children run in their school meets. She liked flowers, gardening, sewing, crafts, cooking and baking. Amy enjoyed going camping and traveling as well, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.  She will be missed always by her family and friends; she truly was the best Mom in the world.

A service to celebrate Amy’s life will be at St. John's The Evangelist Catholic Church 209 South Spring Street Hartford City at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 01, 2014 with Father David Newton officiating.  Interment will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery in Hartford City.

Donald ”Doc” L. Smith

Donald ”Doc” L. Smith, 68, of Warren, IN, passed away at 8:53 AM on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at his residence in Warren.  He was born on Thursday, March 15, 1945, in Kokomo, IN.  He married Diane Merckx on Monday, February 25, 1963 in Huntington, IN.  Doc previously worked as a Truck Driver for 20 years at Stoops Express in Anderson, IN.  He served in the United States Army 9th Infantry Division from 1965-1967, serving in the Vietnam War. He enjoyed guns, working on his lawn mowers, fishing, hunting and gardening. Doc coached baseball in Warren for several years.

George W. Brewer

George W. Brewer, 93, of Van Buren, IN, passed away at 11:45 AM on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the VA Hospital in Marion, IN.  He was born on Sunday, June 06, 1920, in Marion, IN, the son of the late Benjamin D. and Lena (Mansbarger) Brewer.  George served in the Army in World War II.  He married Lois Bollhoefer on Thursday, November 01, 1945, Lois passed away in 1995.  George had retired from General Motors in Marion in 1982.  George was an active member of the Van Buren Lions Club.  He was also a member of the Black Creek Conservation Club.  He was a member of the Van Buren United Methodist Church.  George enjoyed playing cards and mowing the yard for anybody who needed it done.  George was the oldest living person in Van Buren at the time of his passing.  He will be truly missed by all.
